Hi Everyone, and WELCOME to The Writing Fairy website. I'm Dorothea Helms, freelance writer, poet, book author, fiction dabbler, writing instructor, keynote speaker, humorist, wife, mother and slave to my English Bulldog, Margaret. My website is undergoing a facelift, boob lift, liposuction, weight loss program ... wait a minute - those are things I need personally. Sheesh. But my website IS in transition after being neglected for a LONG time. My goal is to inspire writers; my method humour (or humor in the U.S.). Enjoy!

Coaxing closet writers to emerge and make their magic known!

Watch for my announcement soon for the next “Whenever I Feel Like It” Writing Fairy writing contest. I’ve made up my own genre. What fun!

Details to come soon.

HI all,

This fall, I’ll be teaching Creative Writing at Blue Heron Books once again. The course will run for 10 Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. If you have an inkling to be a writer but have no idea what that means, this is the course for you. If you’ve done some writing and have no idea what to do with it, this is the course for you. If you would like to take an interest course that’s a lot of fun and doesn’t involve tests and grades, this is the course for you.

We will cover both fiction and nonfiction. The classes will be run workshop style. Beginning in the second week, students will read their assignments aloud, and we will all critique them. This is not scary – in fact, one of the benefits of this course is learning how to offer feedback that is tactful and constructive, and how to accept it graciously. From the first night, we will create a safe environment within which to share writing.

Did I mention fun? We have a LOT of that!

AND – for those of you who might prefer to study other writing topics, my buddy and gorgeous instructor extraordinaire Sue Reynolds will offer Memoir Writing on Sunday evenings, and the  devasatingly handsome James Dewar will offer Poetry on Wednesday evenings.

Come take a course in Blue Heron Books – CBA Libris’ Bookseller of the Year!
